Jazz Cellar 11 is proud to present the launch of the new album "Underground Roller Coaster" by Diego Piñera Berlin Odd Wisdom.
Diego Piñera has proven time and time again that he is one of the most exciting drummers in contemporary jazz and knows how to put a good band together. The 42-year-old's life has taken him from Uruguay to Cuba, from the USA to Berlin; from 16 recordings (2 of them with ACT Music), through hundreds of concerts on four continents, to a Grammy nomination, an Echo Jazz Award and, most recently, the German Jazz Award in 2023. Scott Colley, Donny Mc Caslin, Ben Monder, Sebastian Schunke, Joo Kraus, Omar Sosa - even a small fraction of Diego's list of collaborators is impressive.
Of course, Diego's next album had to be the result of the experience he had gained, but also of a new (re)discovery and a personal challenge. A masterpiece that embodies both Diego's impulsive passion and his "musical wisdom". The album "Underground Rollercoaster" is a symbol of all this. But what is this music and what makes it special? "Underground Rollercoaster is more than just music. It is the true story of a great musician, of happiness and fear, of failure and fighting spirit, of illness and new direction.
"Latin Jazz meets Berlin Jazz" has always been the motto of this quartet. But it is only after a long musical journey that Diego finally finds his way back to his native Uruguay, playing a variety of traditional percussion instruments from there, which he knows from earlier times. Also, in keeping with the old-school tradition, everything was recorded and performed simultaneously in the same room. You could literally hear the shared energy; never before had Diego played for so long with the same group. Unadulterated, authentic and just plain good.
This truly identity-forming album is a must for jazz and world music fans, as well as anyone interested in Piñera's complex metrics. Although it may sound simple, technically it is Diego's most challenging work yet.
This concert is sponsored by the Goethe Institute.
