In the 1980s in Iran, 18-year-old Mohsen Makhmalbaf participated in a protest against the Shah's regime, where he stabbed a police officer and was sentenced to five years in prison. After twenty years, having become a renowned director, he meets his former enemy again during an audition. It turns out that the event dramatically changed the lives of both men, and Makhmalbaf decides to recreate it in a film. 'Bread and Flower' is a melancholic and witty meta-cinematic experiment that tells the personal stories of the two protagonists - their encounter with idealism and betrayal, youth and the passage of time, love and its end. It also reveals the ambiguous relationship between truth and memory. The film also serves as a commentary on the political atmosphere of the time. Rated N-13.
The film is in Persian with Lithuanian and English subtitles.
