On 31 July at 19:00 we invite you to immerse yourself in a musical journey that will take you back to the 14th century and allow you to hear one of the greatest works of the Middle Ages.
A few months ago, the GŠ Ensemble presented the music of the School of Notre-Dame, also known as the ars antiqua, which was born at the turn of the 12th century. This school was the first to write down and sing organum, which is a multi-voice work.In the 14th century, the ars antiqua was replaced by a new style of music, the ars nova, with more complex rhythms.
This time, the GS Ensemble will present Messe de Nostre-Dame (Mass of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris, 1364) by Guillaume de Machaut, the most famous composer of ars nova music.
This is the first polyphonic mass of which the composer is known. This work not only reflects the musical era of its time, but also introduces one of the most interesting personalities of the time, the musician, poet, diplomat and canon Guillaume de Machaut. At a time when the colourful Gothic style was striving for universality, Guillaume de Machaut, described by his contemporaries as "the earthly god of harmony", was creating an art free from the weight of local traditions.
The ensemble of the Shrine of Mercy: Gabija Adamonytė, Jean-Etienne Langianni, Juozapas Ivanauskas, Laurynas Adamonis, Milda Adamonytė, Tautvydas Mažeika.
