This time, one of the most renowned and experienced Pakistani clarinettists, Jaffar Hussain Randhawa, is coming to Vilnius, whose works are heard in his native Pakistan, on his world tours and, for example, at the NTS.
Jaffar Hussain Randhawa will be joined in Vilnius by Riaz Ahmad (tabla) and Farhan Hassan (harmonium).
Jaffar Hussain Randhawa is one of the few people in the whole of South Asia to continue the now rare tradition of playing Hindustani classical music on the clarinet, a Western instrument not usually heard in traditional ragas and tumri.
Jaffar Hussain Randhawa was born into a family of brass band musicians, his grandfather having been a brass musician in the 20th century. His grandfather founded the Punjab Orchestra in the mid-2000s and his father went on to lead the orchestra, making a name for himself at a time when there was fierce competition in Punjab between brass bands such as the famous Babu Band and the Sohni Band. He himself learnt from Ustad Sohni Khan and was greatly influenced by the famous Ustad Sadiq Ali Mando, one of the best known classical clarinet players in the subcontinent.
Jaffar Hussain is distinguished by his masterful clarinet performance of classical forms such as Raag, Thumri and Kafi, where he is able to reproduce the melodic ornaments that are characteristic of this music, and at the same time show a creative approach to rhythm (laya) and layakaari (rhythmic interplay).
