Event description
Jazmina Cininas is perhaps best known for her technically challenging reductive linocuts of female werewolves, but more recently she has been creating artists' books out of discarded print publications and lagerfones out of used bottle caps and reclaimed wood. Her work draws heavily on her ancestral heritage, incorporating Baltic motifs and narratives of migration and transformation, which have become an autobiographical part of her exploration of her hybrid Australian and Lithuanian identity. The use of recycled materials in later projects reflects a conscious decision to engage in more ecologically sustainable art practices, which she attributes to the legacy of ingenuity she inherited from her refugee parents and grandparents. In The Sparrow Made Some Beer, the artist presents eleven lagerfones from the past and new works created especially for this exhibition during her two-month residency at Kaunas Picture Gallery. The new works use bottle caps collected by the Kultūra café, supplemented with the artist's personal stock. The exhibition and the creative process were supported by the National M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art and the Lithuanian Australian Foundation. The exhibition will be open at Kaunas Picture Gallery (K. Donelaičio g. 16, Kaunas) until 27 August.
