The Italian Cultural Institute in Lithuania and the JazzCellar11 club present the Italian jazz grandmaster Ark Ovrutski and his trio.
Italian jazz, although relatively little known in Lithuania, has quite an important position in the European jazz. Double bassist and composer Ark Ovrutski is more than just a representative of Italian jazz. He has established himself in the US jazz market and has had an impressive career there, with one of his most notable achievements being a concert at Lincoln Center.
Since 2005, Ovrutski has been playing jazz in the US. Curtis Fuller, Carmen Lundy, Mark Soskin, Steve Williams, Larry Willis, Javon Jackson, J.D. Walter, Duduka da Fonseca, Patience Higgins, Gerald Hayes, Michael Borstlap, Cynthia Scott, Jim Rotondi, Will Boulware, Donald Edwards and James Spaulding, among others. In 2007, Arch attended graduate school at Rutgers University in New Jersey, studying with bassist Mike Richmond, drummer Victor Lewis and pianist Stanley Cowell, among others. He later obtained his doctorate from New York University, choosing the most ambitious bigned compositions from the repertoire of Charles Mingus as the subject of his doctoral project. Ark's album 44:33 (2014), featuring Mike Dease and Ulysses Owens, was released on ZOHO. This CD was nominated by DOWNBEAT in the PLAYERS category in June 2014 and received a lot of positive feedback.
