The exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the writer Antanas Jonynas and the jubilee of his son, poet and translator Antanas A. Jonynas. The outdoor exhibition was prepared by the Alytus Regional History Museum staff. The exhibition is on display in the courtyard of the V. K. Jonynas Gallery. Dzūkija is home to an old, very broad Jonynas family, with many prominent personalities who have done great service to Lithuania. The Jonyns' genealogical tree is long-lived, widely branched and richly leafy. A royal privilege issued in 1484 to the founder of the family, Januškevičius, testifies to the fact that the roots of the family go back to the 15th century. The genealogical tree, which is housed in the Antanas Jonynas Memorial Museum, includes only the Jonynas who lived and are still living in the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest known member of the family was Mateušas Januškevičius-Jonynas, who lived in the village of Daugirdai in the middle of the 19th century and had six sons and two daughters. After the uprising of 1863, M. Januškevičius changed his surname to Janynas for fear of reprisals from the tsarist authorities. Later on, the surname changed to Jonynų. The Jonynai family is characterised by its creative and intellectual powers; its representatives have reached the heights of art and science, contributed to the promotion of Lithuania in the world, and to the preservation and strengthening of its spiritual foundations. The museum's goal is not to reveal the secret of the Jonynai family's talents, but to introduce visitors to some of the representatives of this family and to reveal the personalities of their extraordinary talents.
