The plot of this opera, based on Fernando Pessoa's play "The Sailor", revolves around three sisters who keep vigil overnight at the urn of their fourth dead sister. To push past a time that is less and less theirs, the sisters tell stories about their pasts, about who they might have been, until one of them talks about a sailor who, after a shipwreck on an uninhabited island, dreams of creating a new reality. One day a ship passes by the island, but the sailor is no longer there. The sisters begin to question their reality: could they be part of the sailor's imagination and not the other way around? As is typical of many of Pessoa's texts, The Sailor is imbued with a mystical atmosphere, symbolic language and a mood that defies description. In their interpretation, the artists will explore the boundary between reality and imagination; the themes of loss and pain. The artists highlight a fragment of a dialogue between two sisters: "FIRST. Why die? - SECOND. Maybe you don't dream enough..." This speaks of the limitlessness of the human soul, hidden in the very essence of the wonder of life, which is constantly overshadowed and distorted in the infinity of modern attention spans.
