The older generation of Lithuanian film lovers probably still nostalgically remembers the legendary Italian mafia TV series "Aštuonkojis" and its main character - Commissioner Katani. Actor Michele Placido, who perfectly embodied that character, is the director of a new Italian historical drama film "Karavadžo šešėlis" and also plays a minor role as Cardinal Del Monte. Italy, 1610. In the holy city of Rome, talented but audacious artist Michelangelo Merisi, widely known as Caravaggio (played by actor Riccardo Scamarcio), causes increasing outrage. Not only does he ignore the Church's instructions regarding the portrayal of religious themes in his artwork, but he has recently been sentenced to death for killing a rival. After receiving a plea for clemency from Caravaggio, Pope Paul V is unable to make a decision. On one hand, Caravaggio is undeniably talented, but on the other hand, his paintings depict thieves, criminals, and prostitutes. Before making a decision, the Pope decides to enlist the help of the secretive Vatican agency and orders a thorough investigation into Caravaggio. One of the Vatican's best investigators, known as The Shadow (played by actor Louis Garrel), takes on the task. Realizing that Caravaggio's life is now in his hands, The Shadow immerses himself fully into Caravaggio's crazy, tumultuous, and complex life.
