Celebrating the 135th anniversary of the birth of Paulus Galaune, we present a collection of the professor's miniatures from the collections of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, which has never been shown publicly before, consisting of eighteen mostly 19th-century miniatures featuring the portraits of the nobility, warlords, and other historical figures. Most of the miniatures were painted in watercolour or gouache on ivory plates in bronze frames. Galaunė treasured this small collection of miniatures, which he had been collecting for almost half a century, above all because it is not easy to increase a collection of this kind: miniatures are usually family heirlooms, and few people want to part with them. Another reason, as the professor wrote, and which is probably common to most collectors, is that "the appearance of each of them in the collection has its own story, its own personal experiences". Art historians have estimated that there could be around 200 miniatures in Lithuania, preserved in museums and private collections, so this collection of Galaune's is truly significant, both artistically and in terms of its size. The A. and P. Galaunis House-Museum (Vydūno al. 2, Kaunas) will be open until 8 February.
