Laura Kunciūtė (b. 1993) is an interdisciplinary textile artist exploring the phenomenon of memory of matter. She graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2017 with a degree in textile art and design and was awarded the A. and A. Tamošaičiai scholarship. Her work has been exhibited at NY Textile Month in the United States, as well as in group exhibitions in Lithuania, Denmark and the United Kingdom, and has been published in international publications. The exhibition "Artful Materials" will feature works from the Canadian and Danish residencies, inviting us to listen to our senses, to explore whether "walls really do have ears", and to look at textiles as a sensitive and enduring play of matter. The works in the exhibition echo the artist's main creative thread - attempts to grasp memories inscribed in material bodies. Through processes enveloped in rituals and archaic developments, the artist creates soft architectural inclusions filled with the energy of places of power or, conversely, cleansed of metaphysical overloads. Threads dyed with plant decoctions or rust become conductors to charge the works with a bright burst of energy, while carbon elements absorb the overflowing spaces of stories. Not only soft sculptures and art objects are exhibited, but also the creative process itself, the slow and rhythmic transformation of material into fabrics and artefacts is revealed. The documentation in the margins of the exhibition is an equally important part of the exhibition.
