Event description

In 2002, the 20th and final volume of the Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language was published, completing the largest work of 20th-century Lithuanian linguistics, the text of which had been written and edited by several generations of linguists, more than 70 wordsmiths, 23 editors, and thousands of word collectors. The dictionary has 22,000 pages, more than 11 million words, about 236,000 lexicographical entries. Written over 100 years on the basis of a card file of 5 million leaflets. It is a treasure trove of diverse lexis, comprising about 1000 sources. The 1st volume of the Dictionary, started by Kazimieras Būga, was published in 1924. From Volume III in 1956, the instructions for writing the Dictionary were changed; the first two volumes are hidden in a special fund. From 1956 onwards, volumes appeared every 3-4-5 years. The last volume XX was published in 2002, with Prof. Vytautas Vitkauskas as editor-in-chief. The twenty volumes of the dictionary cover the lexicon of the written Lithuanian language from 1547 to 2001 and the lexicon of the living language (dialects), collected since 1902. It is an invaluable heritage of our language, preserving the memory and culture of the nation.
