William Shakespeare MACBETH tragedy

The desire for power, the pursuit of absolute power, the elimination of dissent, and the crushing of humanity are themes explored in William Shakespeare's legendary tragedy Macbeth. 400 years after the play was written, these themes are still relevant in our world. New Macbeths are born, ready to bring their nation to its knees, destroy their neighbours, and even burn the whole world in a nuclear mushroom for the sake of their ambitions.

Of course, not all of today's Macbeths are dictators at the height of their political power. Some of them use their power to manipulate their families, psychologically terrorise business partners, subordinates, colleagues, neighbours and others. Do they, like Shakespeare's protagonists, have to stifle their conscience and sell their souls to the devil as a result? Is it possible to endure this without going mad and perishing while still alive?

To find the answers to these and other questions, the creators of the play will invite the audience to the Aukštaitija Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot, where they will get a very close-up look and feel of the spirit of "Macbeth". In this unconventional space, director Aleksandras Špilevoj's performance will immerse the audience in Shakespeare's tragedy, which was also staged by Maestro Juozas Miltinis at the Panevėžys Drama Theatre several decades ago, and which is shrouded in frightening and mystical legends.

A. Špilevoj: "The world would be a much more beautiful place if this play were no longer relevant today. But it is what it is. We cannot fail to see what is happening around us, which is why we are sure that this play is very timely. Shakespeare believed that the blackness of infinite power is not irresistible. I am not so optimistic. But I can't see evil and pretend it doesn't exist, so I invite you to make an effort to at least get to know it, and to give all your strength to resist it."
