A world classic beyond the canons of classical theatre, this is a story about the desire for power that poisons the mind and sinks deep into the abyss of inhumanity, told through a synthesis of sound, movement and Shakespeare's language.
The sweet taste of power promised to Macbeth by the witches gradually clouds his mind, and by the time the first dagger is stained with blood, it is clear that there is no turning back, and each step brings Macbeth closer to self-destruction. The play charts the terrible path of human change - how a man gradually becomes a tyrant, how power gained through violence and the desperate efforts to hold on to it plunge a man into the depths of paranoia, guilt, fear and utter insanity.
Director Oleg Shaposhnikov stresses that it is not the witches' spells that are responsible for the hero's heinous deeds. That's what the play is about - the inner struggle that everyone is involved in, but Macbeth loses the battle."
The cast is made up mainly of young theatre actors who have had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Shakespeare's play and to master it in the original language, under the guidance of British actor, educator and Shakespearean scholar Paul Goodwin.
This production is supported by the British Council in Latvia.
