If the sports drama 'Girl Worth a Million' had been made by the Japanese master of everyday poetry Yasujirō Ozu, something similar to this film presented at the Berlin Film Festival would probably have been created. Its silent and deceptively delicate heroine, Keiko, works as a maid during the day and spends her evenings in a rundown boxing club in Tokyo. She is hearing impaired, but recently she surprisingly won victories in her first professional fights. As she prepares for the third match, Keiko suddenly starts to doubt her abilities and experiences fear of losing for the first time. Inspired by the true story of boxer Keiko Ogasawara, the film 'Small, Slow, But Determined' focuses on the moments that are often left off-screen in sports dramas. It is a graceful, meditative, and quietly beautiful film that is easy to overlook but remains in memory for a long time. Rated N-16.
The film is in Japanese with Lithuanian subtitles.
