"Daffodil and Chrysostom" is based on the novel of the same name by Swiss writer H. Hesse. The story of the work covers the entire life of a young man who, after leaving the monastery, wanders through medieval Germany in search of what can be described as "the meaning of life".
Hesses's novels take place in a symbolic, subconscious plane, where dreams are intertwined with reality, visions are interwoven into the world and become the material that drives the characters forward. These visions and dreamlike, metaphorical language become a connective part of the fabric of the performance, filled with symbols and medieval Gregorian chant and secular music, which is played live throughout the performance. "Narcissus and Chrysostom is an opportunity to discover the work of the great 20th century writer H. Hesse, who earned him secular fame.
