Event description
A set of fruit knives belonging to the family of Malvina Šokelytė-Valeikienė (1898-1981), a teacher, and Matas Valeika (1878-1937), a pharmacist. This set of bronze fruit knives, made in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, is not unique or special: such or similar tools could be found in the homes of a common intelligent family. However, the life stories of their owners are truly exceptional. Valeika was not only a pharmacist, but also a book bearer and an active social activist, and he is best known as a promoter of Lithuanian identity and a unifier of Lithuanian pharmacists. Living in Giedraičiai since 1908, he organised the first Lithuanian choir, founded an agricultural society, the consumer company "Vilnija", and organised an agricultural and handicraft exhibition. During the War of Independence, Valeika organised a group of partisans and bought them weapons, but was arrested and imprisoned. For his services to Lithuania, Valeika was awarded the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas and the Independence Medal. In 1935, he settled with his family in Kaunas, where he worked in the pharmacy he had bought in Petrašiūnai. The Castle Section of Kaunas City Museum (17 Pilies St.) will be open until 11 February 2025.
