Frequent concert-goers of the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra will have noticed that the ensemble presents to them the brightest stars of classical music from abroad, with whom they perform a precisely selected programme.
But playing with the younger generation of our country's classical musicians gives you a completely different feeling, one that is hard to describe in words. Therefore, this concert promises a wide range of emotions rarely felt. Kaunas Symphony Orchestra presents Vytenis Gurstis, a charismatic flautist, laureate of national and international competitions, an active performer both in Europe and Lithuania, and an active participant in the country's musical life. The concert will be conducted by conductor Karolis Variakojis, who represents the younger generation of musicians and is rapidly reaching the heights of his career.
The concert programme will feature a concert by one of the most innovative and significant composers of the 20th century, United States composer C. Ives' "The Unanswered Question". This composer is considered an innovator and avant-garde. He attempted to convey philosophical ideas and concepts in his music. One of his most famous works, written in 1908, is a striking example of this approach. In it, the solitary trumpet parts seem to express a "question" in the "universe" of the string ensemble's sounds, while the "answer" is provided by a group of wind players. As the work progresses, the brass band's "answer" sounds more and more vigorous, until at the very end there is a haunting silence of loneliness.
This concert will be a great opportunity for the audience to enjoy the incredible beauty of the flute melody. Vytenis Gurstis together with Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra will perform Danish composer K. Nilsen's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. It interweaves an immensely wide palette of feelings and stories, which require extraordinary mastery to convey. This is something that the soloist of the evening has mastered very well.
The Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra is extremely pleased and supportive of the younger generation of musicians' desire and aspiration to promote the works of our country's composers. Therefore, they will perform Julius Juzeliūnas's Fourth Symphony.
This is a concert that combines the melodiousness of the masterfully controlled flute, the expressiveness of the works and the exquisite subtleties of the conducting.
