Lokarnos, an award-winning film by Romanian director Radu Jude, is a shape-shifting, astonishingly playful, and wrathful critical essay disguised as a dark road comedy. Its main character is Angela, an energetic but worn-out production assistant. She works for 16 hours a day and, during her free moments, comments on her surroundings in the persona of a fictional internet character - a vulgar, uneducated, constantly swearing naked man. Exceeding the speed limit and getting into arguments with other drivers, she drives around the city, looking for heroes for a work safety campaign and revealing not only the deplorable state of Romanian roads but also the rampant corruption and social inequality.
At the same time funny and infuriating, this dizzyingly paced and intelligent film effortlessly combines audacious intellectualism with a curious insightfulness, never getting boring even after almost three full hours. N-18
The film is in Romanian with Lithuanian and English subtitles.
