Poland, the era of communism. Marta is a romantic, but everyone at school considers her a loser. She lives in one room with her sister Kasia and her grandmother, who tells her grandchildren about the uprising instead of fairy tales. Marta's father is an academic who is strangled by the system, he runs the house after work and is secretly jealous of his richer brother-in-law; mother is the chairman of the trade union, who dreams of escaping from Poland.
