Terence Blanchard, a six-time winner of the prestigious Grammy award and composer of the acclaimed opera 'Fire Shut Up in My Bones', presents another Metropolitan global premiere: 'Champion'. Based on the true story of boxer Emile Griffith, who overcomes all obstacles to become a three-time world champion, the lead role is performed by bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green. Another bass-baritone, Eric Owens, plays the role of the mature hero (who incidentally died in 2013) tormented by the ghosts of the past. Soprano Latonia Moore plays the grieving mother of the hero, Emelda, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe plays the role of the owner of the bar where the former champion Kiki Hagan spends his twilight years. Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the orchestra in this 3 hour and 30 minute production.
