Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen will sing the title role at the Metropolitan this season, in addition to J. Verdi's Tosca, but also in the only opera written by van Beethoven about Leonora's efforts to free her beloved husband Florestan from prison by disguising herself as a man.
Suspecting that her missing husband has been locked away in a dungeon in the prison, Leonora makes a bold decision: disguising herself as a man, she takes a job as an assistant to the prison warden Rock. Leonora, now Fidelio, quickly gains Rock's trust and even sparks the romantic dreams of his daughter Marcelina. Desperate to dig up any information about Florestan, Leonora is one day given the task of digging up a grave in the prison basement. The Minister himself is visiting the prison and the warden, Pizarro, not wanting to take any unnecessary risks, decides to kill the inconvenient prisoner. The time when Leonora can still save her beloved Florestan is running out with every second.
