On April 2, Panevėžys City Art Gallery will open an exhibition of folk art of Panevėžys region, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Festival of Songs.
The exhibition features works by the members of the Panevėžys Community of the Lithuanian Folk Artists' Union (LTS). As every year, the exhibition will be characterised by the abundance of authors and works: 223 folk art masters will present 794 works.
Visitors will see the works of the folk art masters from Anykščiai, Biržai, Kupiškis, Pasvalys, Panevėžys, Rokiškis and Ukmergė. The exposition will reflect a variety of traditional genres: blacksmithing, woodcarving, ceramics, painting, textiles, customary art - Easter eggs, verbs, masks.
In 2023, the tradition of folk gardens was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, adding to the list of traditional folk art, including traditional songs, the tradition of song festivals and the tradition of cross-craft. Straw gardens symbolising the world will also be an important highlight of the Panevėžys Region Folk Art Exhibition.
"2024 has been declared the Year of Song Festival by the Seimas. Many events will take place throughout the year to mark the occasion. In the summer, during the Song Festival, folk artists from our community will be demonstrating their crafts in Vilnius, in the town of traditional crafts. The most beautiful works selected from past exhibitions will be featured in the folk art exhibition "From the Core", which will open on 1 July. "Folk art is very closely related to the people's worldview, lifestyle, customs and customs," said Audronė Virbalienė, the head of the Panevėžys Community of the Union of Folk Artists.
"Folk art exhibitions have been held in Aukštaitija since 1990, and each time they attract a great interest from visitors. We hope that this exhibition will encourage people to take an interest in the history of folk art and to feel its value in modern life," said A. Virbalienė.
The exhibition will be open in Panevėžys until 4 May. The exhibition will be discussed and closed on 4 May at 12.00 p.m.
