The Anthology of the Prepared Piano is a concert programme exploring the phenomenon of modification of traditional instruments. It will feature John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano, an iconic and historically significant cycle. Although the work was written quite a long time ago (1946-1948), the means of expression it encapsulates are often found in the works of contemporary composers from around the world.
The work of John Cage (1912-1992) is regarded as one of the greatest influences on the development of music in the 20th century. He is considered a pioneer of uncertainty in music, electroacoustic music and the use of non-standard musical instruments. A complete performance of Cage's cycle is extremely rare in Europe. Academic music of this period (1940-60) is rarely updated in Lithuania. The performance of the cycle therefore testifies to Cage's versatility and relevance in the context of contemporary art.
A repaired piano is an instrument whose sound has been temporarily altered by the use of screws, bolts, mutes, rubber erasers and/or other objects placed on the strings or between them. Although more commonly found in today's improvisation programmes, prepared instruments are also a popular means of expression among contemporary academic composers such as Crumb, Saunders, Cowell and others.
