Quiet Hirayama wakes up early in the morning, puts on his work clothes, buys a canned drink from a vending machine, gets into his minibus and goes to the city. He cleans public toilets in Tokyo as if they were a sacred place, and his work resembles a ritual. Sometimes, Hirayama sits in the park and eats a sandwich, and sometimes he patiently helps his easy-going colleague. After work, on his way back home, he stops at the sauna, listens to Patti Smith and Van Morrison in his car, and reads William Faulkner and Patricia Highsmith before going to sleep. The next morning, he wakes up early again and does the same thing, but a happy smile never disappears from Hirayama's face because he simply enjoys life.
