The festival programme will culminate with "Requiem in memoriam Stasys Lozoraitis" by the famous Lithuanian composer, teacher and politician Osvaldas Balakauskas. The composer was motivated to give new meaning to the tradition of Christian music by his deep respect for the personality to whom the work is dedicated - Stasys Lozoraitis, the Lithuanian President of Hope.
In 1993, when Balakauskas served as the Lithuanian ambassador to France, Spain and Portugal, Lozoraitis stood for the presidency of the Republic of Lithuania, but was not elected. He died a year later. Soon after, the composer immortalised the memory of Stasys Lozoroitis by composing his only religious opus, Requiem, for which he was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art a year later.
Balakauskas's Requiem encourages us to think of our journey to Eternity as a journey of light and peace. According to the composer, he wrote the Requiem as an emphatically traditional opus, looking back to the origins of the genre - Gregorian chant, the organum, and the style of Ars Nova motets. Balakauskas' cycle is intimate, meditative, chamber-like, suggesting a peaceful encounter with the face of God.
