The project "reStart", organised by the Lithuanian Photographers' Union every two years, is a collective look at the situation in today's visual culture field. For the past few years, the exhibition has been organised as an international forum for contemporary photography, where artists from all over the world present their work. The participating artists symbolically diagnose both the tendencies of photography as a tool and a mode of expression, as well as contemporary socio-cultural processes. The issues of individual works range from rethinking ecological problems and threats to conceptual constructions of personal biography, from analyses of collective traumas to a rather straightforward depiction of the encounter with them, and it's always a pleasure to see how the medium of photography is being reconsidered in the context of today's world.
The Debut competition, which was at the origin of the reStart project, dictates the principles of the selection of the exhibition participants. In the initial phase, authors submit their work through an open call (this year 143 authors submitted applications with 2161 entries from 26 countries), while in the later phase the exhibition takes on the characteristics of a curatorial project. The selected authors specially adapt their ideas for the exhibition.
The works for the reStart exhibition were selected by Aurelija Maknytė, Vilma Samulionytė, Arturas Valiauga and Gytis Skudžinskas.
