Samuel Bak is a boy who survived. His life before that fateful summer of 1941 in Vilnius was completely different: he grew up safe and happy, loved by his parents and pampered by his grandparents. Later, he referred to that world as his "lost paradise" and spent decades trying to recreate it on his canvas. And although, no matter where he lived, he always introduced himself as a Vilnius resident, it did not take him long to return physically to the city of his childhood. However, Vilnius is stubborn, its towers, the pavement of its streets, the bromos of its courtyards, the arched windows of its buildings, as if they had cast a spell on the artist's hand, returned again and again to his canvases, as if inviting Samuel Bak to take a chance.
Today, Vilnius is proud to be home to the world-renowned artist Samuel Bak's museum at the crossroads of one of its streets, where images on canvas tell the preserved and ancient stories of our city. The new exhibition of Samuel Bak's works is currently on display, celebrating the 700th anniversary of Vilnius and the artist's 90th birthday.
