Event description

The exhibition is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the artist.
The exhibition consists of two parts.
In the first part of the exhibition, the author presents a kind of alchemical model of a time machine - the past and the present intertwined in the images, which constructs a unique image that has both the charge of a historical event and the moment of capturing a moment of time that is typical for photography. The architectural images of Vilnius, which show medieval buildings, and the panoramas of the contemporary city were printed in the 19th century using Van Dyke's patented photographic technique. The print is the same as it was 100 years ago, each print is unique, and the texture of the paper brings the image closer to a sheet of graphic art.
Saulius Paukštys invites the viewer to experience and admire the photographic prints, which take the viewer back a hundred years, and at the same time to search for a cipher that reveals the charm of modern art.
The second part of the exhibition - "Kaleidoscopes of Vilnius" - interprets photography with contemporary means of graphic image construction.
In recent years, the life of historic Vilnius and its old suburbs has been changing very rapidly. The city's architecture and textures are changing, new structures are emerging. Old buildings, old quarters, church towers, the heroes of the traditional, familiar Vilnius landscape are increasingly replaced by new, modern silhouettes. Observing and exploring the new cityscape, Saulius Paukštys, away from the central streets of the Old Town, away from the tourist trails, in the nooks and crannies of Vilnius Old Town, searches for buildings whose simplicity and functionality testify to their longevity. They have not been liked for more than 100 years.
The author is interested in the quarters of ordinary citizens, residential infrastructure, engineering facilities, small architecture, material, surface textures and colours. After the factories, which had been operating there for decades, left the city centre, Vilnius Old Town, and especially its outskirts, became a neglected periphery for many years. Since Lithuania became an independent country and a member of the European Union, major renewal processes have taken place over several years. Soviet-era factories have been transformed into magnificent residential neighbourhoods and the city is expanding and changing before our eyes. Looking through the collection of photographs by Sauliaus Pauksis, one gets the feeling that these kaleidoscopic fragments will be even more different tomorrow.
