Event description
The exhibition is a series of photographs in three parts: 'Non-urban City', 'A Sense of a Different Time', and 'Kaunas is Creating'. "The Non-City City". "The City of Kaunas", a series of photographs by S. Lukošius, invites you to travel into the world of the city's enchanting past. Although we are constantly rushing towards ever greater "order", comfort, civilisation, we see the other side in the photographer's freeze-frames: the struggle of contrasts, the pausing of old forms before they disappear, or rather, they are displaced. And then we feel a melancholic longing, remembering the spontaneity of nature and the territories of agricultural life that have not yet been fully conquered, and the different relationships and ethics that existed between people before. "A sense of a different time". The photographs by S. Lukosius, who worked at the Construction Design Institute, mainly capture the architecture and urban change of different Kaunas districts in the 1950s and 1980s. However, they also show everyday life pulsating in the streets, the dictates of ideology, and the author's social and artistic sensitivity to the sights observed in public. "Kaunas in the Making". Most of Lukošius' photographs focus on the city's change. The 6-8 decades of the 20th century were a time of intensive development of Kaunas and the formation of new districts, when the city took on a more contemporary appearance of a developed metropolis, with its more prominent infrastructural trajectories and accents: new residential and industrial districts, hydroelectric power stations, bridges, squares. Unfortunately, alongside this, the photographs show individual blocks of the Old Town doomed to destruction, or the Vilijampolė Cemetery, or the demolition of the building that obstructs the Lenin monument in the then Yulius Janonis (now Vienybės) Square. The exhibition will be open until 1 March at the Kėdainiai District Municipality Mikalojaus Daukša Public Library (11 Didžiosios Rinkos a., Kėdainiai).
