Participants will be introduced to a very interesting and emotionally enchanting form of music developed by adherents of the Sufi religious mystical movement in India and Pakistan, beginning in the 13th century. The focus of the music is on the intense expression of emotion in the voices of the singers, combined with instruments and clapping to provoke a state of upliftment close to trance.
The most famous exponent of this style of singing, who has made the genre of qawwali well-known and even popular in the West, is the Pakistani Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. After historical commentary and an introduction to the worldview and poetry of the Sufis, we will listen to their authentic recordings from vinyl records.
