The Return is the story of a "world turned upside down" - a world that will come to an end, when the wronged will finally take revenge on their abusers. Except that in the play, the "world upside down" is not the end of days in our world, but the transformation of the inner life and love of a divorcing couple, Michael and Claire, which culminates in an impossible overcoming of the biological laws and social rules of our reality.
"When I die, the world shifts a little to the right, a little downwards, and the distance between me and the you I'm cuddling changes almost imperceptibly... though the change feels like an opening chasm, and the chasm adds to the vertigo. But in the end it doesn't matter..."
The play is based on a short story of the same name by the Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño.
