After a major renovation, the Jonas Šliūpas Museum opens its doors with special exhibits - the famous operatic works of Kazis Varnelis. On this occasion, selected works by the artist will be brought from the Kazis Varnelis House-Museum in Vilnius, and alongside them will be exhibited textiles from different regions of Lithuania, which are stored in the collections of the Lithuanian National Museum. It is no coincidence that Kazis Varnelis' works and ethnographic textiles are exhibited in one place. The artist's connection with folk art stems from his family: his father, Kazimieras Varnelis, was a well-known folk craftsman, and his mother, Teofilė Domarkaitė-Varnelienė, was a famous weaver in the Alsėdžiai area. Moreover, Varnelis himself has said that he feels close to the anonymous artists who have repeated the same ornaments thousands of times over the centuries, while at the same time believing in a dialogue with the past and in the continuous evolution of creativity. The exhibition "Identity and Form" is thus an attempt to visualise these thoughts of the famous artist and to find something in common between the works of the modern artist and the often nameless, collectively based folk art, to ask whether the distinction between professional and popular art, which has been established in our culture for centuries, is still valid, or whether it is still possible to find connections between these seemingly different poles of creation and to discern a common thread of evolution.
