Simonas Poška, laureate of the 9th International M. K. Čiurlionis Piano Competition, presents a new solo programme - his piano cycle TEATRO SIUITA.
Simonas on the work:
"When I am listening to music I see images, usually scenes of performances; different characters, movements, costumes, lights and other ideas. Unwritten, they just decay! That's how the performance based on my play "Overture for Theatre" was born. It featured the "Overture", which was imbued with the ideas of the play and later became the first piece in my piano cycle "Theatre Suite". "The dramaturgy of the Overture pointed the way for the whole suite: short charismatic themes were transformed into separate dances - the Waltz, the Tango and the Polka. As if in response to the provocative Overture, the Postlude appeared at the end. At the centre of the work grew the unshakable "Procession", while the improvisations spilled out freely, allowing the set to change. "The dramaturgy of the Theatre Suite works like a piano performance that has taken on a musical form.
In the suite, I openly engage with pop culture, I don't shy away from clichés and cheeky sarcasm, which is always a cover for sensitivity and sincerity; I don't shy away from the primitive or from the academic. I delve polystylistically into the things I care deeply about: authenticity, love, creativity, Lithuanianness."
