Seven-year-old Sol spends the day at her grandfather's house. There she helps her aunts prepare a surprise party for Sol's dad, a young painter. She keeps trying to get to her dad, who is locked in his room, but no one stops her. As the evening approaches, a strange chaotic atmosphere settles over the family home and the relationships of the people around the girl begin to fray under the strain. Sol begins to realise that her world is about to change dramatically. "Lila Avilés announced her talent with her debut "Roommate" and with her second film she seems to have jumped several grades, straight into the main competition in Berlin. From the first frames, the film draws you into the intimate atmosphere of a family, but the meaning of the action becomes clear gradually. The viewer, like a worried child, carefully catches every word and sentence of the adults, trying to understand what is wrong. One of the most organic films I have ever seen, moving in a square. And best of all, this chamber drama is subtly layered with the realities of contemporary Mexico."
