No other part of Vilnius can tell you such a colourful story as Užupis. Here, the wheels of water mills have been turning for ages, nuns have been praying across the bridge to the Bernardine Church, and the smell of souring goat skins has been lingering nearby. Later, the quarter was home to prostitutes who catered to the strangest whims of their clients, and the chimneys of the sauna kilns nearby are smoking. There was a time when Užupis was deserted and dangerous; even taxi drivers were said to avoid Užupis, and one of its streets was nicknamed Death Street. Nowadays, artists live and work here, and politicians and bankers join them, an angel hatched from an egg stands in the main square, a mermaid beckons to passers-by on the waterfront, the Vilnelė River sometimes turns green, the small bars are extremely crowded, and you can find works of art everywhere you look.
