1838-1839 two well-known creators, who were in love with each other at the time, spent the winter together on the Spanish island of Mallorca - the Polish composer F. Chopin and the French writer Žorž Sand. Ž.Sand was then famous as an artist who broke the conservative norms of society, dressed in men's clothes, holding a cigar in her hand - one of the first female pipers of the 19th century. By the time she met Chopin, she had already managed to live in a women's convent, get married, give birth to a son and a daughter, leave her husband, follow her lover to Paris and write several novels under the guise of a male pseudonym - Žorž Sand. Chopin was not yet thirty. But - he is already a known musical genius and virtuoso, who has visited many countries with concerts. Abandoned by the one he was engaged to…
Chopin suffered from coughing fits since childhood, so together with his new lover and her two children, they all decide to go to the Spanish island of Mallorca for the winter with a warm climate.
Despite the domestic difficulties and the undulating lovers' relationship, the trip was productive: after settling in the Valdemosa monastery on the island of Mallorca, the artists worked intensively: F. Šopenas created the famous cycle of preludes for piano op. 28 there, and Ž. Sand wrote the essay-memoir book "Winter in Mallorca".
The painting "F. Chopin and Ž. Sand" by artist E. Delacroix (1838)
The performance-concert script is based on the texts of Žorž Sand, memories of contemporaries, surviving letters testifying to the special experiences of the two creators at the time, moments of love tension and passion, contrasting with the experiences of domestic difficulties: it is a journey of two artists not only to the Spanish island, but also an inner journey to the world of feelings and relationships. The experiences witnessed in words in the script turn into F. Chopin's music, which deepens the narration of the text with an emotional language of sounds. The theme of the work is extremely relevant even today - creative power as the ability to overcome everyday trials given to man, to transform them into experiences on the level of being, the depth of creativity.
In the performance-concert, pianist Eglė Andrejevaitė performs a cycle of twenty-four preludes by F. Šopen, op. 28, fragments from Žorž Sand's book "Winter in Majorca", memories and letters of contemporaries of F. Šopen and Ž. Sand are interpreted by actress Birutė Mar.
