Event description

The photographs of Lithuanian expatriate artist Algimantas Kezis (1928-2015) depict modern North American cities - Chicago, New York, Vancouver - and their inhabitants. The artist Kazys Varnelis is known today not only as a representative of abstract art, but also as a collector of Lithuanian culture. Varnelis's optical paintings, like Kazys's photographs, are distinguished by striking contrasts and the play of shadows, as well as by a particular attention to the structure and rhythm of the composition. Varnelis was not particularly fond of sharing the sources of inspiration behind his compositions - he used to say that the paintings must speak for themselves. Kezys emphasised that form was more important than content in his work. In the shadow of austere, timeless architecture, loneliness emerges as one of the fundamental human conditions. The rich creative legacy of these two artists is today a unique part of the narrative of Lithuanian diaspora art. The exhibition will be held at the Jonas Šliūpas Museum (Vytauto g. 23a, Palanga) until 16 March 2025.
