The First International Summer Festival of Chamber Music "Curonian Spit", held in August 1999 in Neringa on the initiative of Prof. Algirdas Vizgirdas, has become a traditional and significant accent of the cultural development of this region. "Musicians, painters, sculptors, architects, writers and poets have always travelled to Neringa, a charming land created by nature, and I have no doubt they will continue to do so. This stretch of land with its magnificent character, which separates the sea from the lagoon, attracts everyone, as if it were encoded with a transcendent energy that brings us closer to Eternity. The art of music from the Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist and Modernist eras, in all its transformations, brings us closer to Eternity, which awakens an inexorable desire for perfection and creativity," says the initiator of the Festival, Professor Algirdas Vizgirda. The main idea of the Curonian Spit - to present to holidaymakers and tourists coming to the seaside the most outstanding works of the past epochs and the contemporary composers of the Baltic region - is closely linked to the very important programme of the development of Lithuanian regional culture. The main performer of the festival is the chamber music ensemble Musica Humana of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic. The event's programmes feature some of our most renowned instrumentalists, vocal soloists and ensembles. The programmes, professionally performed by excellent musicians, receive special attention from the audience and good critical acclaim. Since 2019, Prof. Robert Beinaris has taken over the leadership of the festival from Prof. A. Vizgirdos.
