Emilia and Giedrius:
The "Winter Journey" concert is a rare opportunity to hear the duet of Emilia and Giedrias (the last time they played together was in Vilnius 10 years ago...).
For this return, the duo chose an exclusive program of F. Šubert and F. Chopin. Schubert wrote the 14th piano sonata after a serious illness. This sonata is like feeling a moment of being between heaven and earth: a procession, human drama, but with which a heavenly calm, light-filled melody keeps intertwining.
The song cycle "Winter Journey" is one of the most prominent opuses not only in F. Šubert's work, but also in the context of the entire history of music. Emilija and Giedrius decided to adapt these songs for a cello and piano duet - three of their chosen songs from this cycle will be played at the concert. One of them - "Gute Nacht" ("Good night") left a great impression on F. Chopin. Perhaps that is why the first theme of the cello sonata (as well as the main idea of the piece) is so similar to the melody of this Schubert song.
Schubert wrote "Winter Journey" in the last years of his life, and Chopin's sonata for piano and cello is his last large-scale opus. Both works are a summary of the creative path of these romantics. For us, it is an opportunity to dive into the beauty hidden in their music, the transience of the moment, the planes of sustainable wisdom...
