It is very likely that if you ask a random passer-by, "What do you know about Lewis Carroll?" you will hear about a little girl, an eternally late white rabbit and a fantastic world. "Alice in Wonderland", originally named by the author "Alice's adventures under the ground", is an attention-grabbing and inexhaustible work. It has been produced in many genres such as musicals, contemporary operas, ballets, films and plays. Behind these adaptations lies a myth, an author, a story that goes far beyond just telling the story of a child's dream. L. Carroll, professor of logic at Oxford, created a world where nonsense and childhood intertwine, raising the question: what remains of Louis for Alice?
In the performance of the Klaipėda Youth Theater, directed by the French Didier Girauldon, "BEING ALICE" is not limited to the representation of the fairy tale that has become a classic. The aim is to explore this duality together with the viewer, the dialogue between the author and his work, between reality and imagination.
What is fascinating about the work of author Lewis Carroll is his ability to reflect the dream-like nature of existence, which is also reminiscent of Shakespeare's famous phrase: "the stuff dreams are made of." This work observes the subtle distance between words and the many meanings they can acquire, which can be assigned to them, an uneven mask. This play of words and their meanings reveals our most intimate truths, which, like reflections in a mirror, can sometimes be cruel, but always sublime. It is a deep questioning of our essence: "to be or not to be" in the presence of others."Alice in Wonderland", "Alice in the Mirror's Kingdom", "The Hunt for Snark", excerpts from the author's letters, as well as poetic, philosophical and theatrical texts: these are only some of the sources that are explored, where each actor becomes a narrator, a character, a singer, musician and puppeteer, immerses himself in history and brings it to life. Every scene, every character, every word spoken opens the door to a world of mystery and magic. In joyful chaos, a moving cabinet of curiosities, performers will take on the challenges of Alice's dream-filled universe and its constant metamorphoses, like artists in their workshop.
