After celebrating the 770th anniversary of the founding of the city of Klaipėda in the summer of 2022, and after the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania declared 2023 as the year of the Klaipėda region, the Klaipėda State Musical Theater began to implement a special project dedicated to these occasions - a collage of choreographic miniatures "Klaipėda: yesterday, today, tomorrow". In it, the universal language of movements, dance, music and images tells about the uniqueness of Klaipėda region and the changing identity of the inhabitants of this region in the course of centuries and in the face of historical transitions.
in 2022 during the preparatory project stage, the artists of the KVMT ballet troupe delved into the history of the Klaipėda region, current affairs and together created a vision of the future of this unique region, with the help of project consultants (among them - Lithuanian theater and film actor, director, Klaipėda University professor Valentinas Masalskis; composer, LMTA Nijolė Sinkevičiūtė, associate professor of the Klaipėda Faculty of Theater Department; coordinator of the folk art studio of the Klaipėda Ethnoculture Center, national costume expert, designer Dr. Elena Matulionienė). In the creative workshop, the artistic concepts of nine 3-10-minute choreographic miniatures were born and developed - plots, choreographic drawing, selected locations, costumes, created and recorded music, video projections - with the aim that all the mentioned elements reflect an authentic worldview unique to the Klaipėda region, mindset, lifestyle.
The creative process of the project was led by KVMT chief choreographer Aurelijus Liškauskas and former KVMT ballet artistic director Jelena Lebedeva. They were assisted by choreography assistants Oleksandra Borodina and Daria Verovka, video creator Imantas Boiko, soundtrack creator and producer Kristijonas Lučinskas, costume stylist Ernesta Venckutė, makeup and hairstylist Aira Braždiene. "We looked for and found connections between movement, language, and history," says one of the art directors of the project, Aurelijs Liškauskas. "Klaipėda's past, present and future are inseparable from nature, the sea, sailors... You will see people dressed in ancient authentic clothes, performing ancient rituals, drinking coffee, because it was enjoyed only in Klaipėda region a hundred years ago. All parts are connected by the sea, which fed the people of this land, linked their lives through common activities, separated those who went on long journeys or drowned those who never returned from it. And, of course, the calamities that shook this region, the division of lands, which, fortunately, led to the restoration of the Klaipėda region to Lithuania, which we are very happy and proud of, are depicted."
Fragments of choreographic miniatures developed in the creative workshop were immortalized in three five-minute short dance films. Each of them was filmed in a different historical place of the Klaipėda region, marking important events for the region, and the dancers filming in them were dressed in stylized traditional Klaipėda costumes, reflecting the long path of historical costume development - from the everyday clothes of the old East Prussian fishermen, farmers and their families to the cosmopolitan clothes of modern townspeople and the futuristic fashion visions. The basis of the concept of each video clip was one color palette, the same historical context, environment, and natural elements. Another highlight of the video clips is the cinematic and engaging fabric of electronic music, the soundtrack of which was created by sound artist and composer Kristijonas Lučinskas. According to him, "in the musical fabric you will hear folk instruments - kankles, birbyna, as well as musical parts recorded by KVMT performers, and everything will be combined by the soundscapes of the city of Klaipėda". In preparing the short dance film project, KVMT collaborated with the Lithuanian fashion brand "2ru2ra", the Directorate of the Pajūris Regional Park, the winter garden of the Kretinga Museum, the Klaipėda Ethnoculture Center, and the Lithuanian Maritime Museum. Amber jewelry was lent by the Amber Museum and store "Amber Queen". Food for filming was supplied by UAB "Pasažo smuklė".
Another form of the project – a collage of full-length choreographic miniatures and video projections performed live – was presented to the audience at the Klaipėda Fisherman's Palace, the International Dance Day and the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Klaipėda's accession to Lithuania. In the stage version, the short dance films turned into video projections, and the miniatures performed by the dancers of the KVMT ballet troupe and the young soloist Safina Judina were complemented by theatrical interventions created by the chief choreographer Aurelijas Liškauskas, promising many fun surprises and allusions to the past, present and assumed future of the Klaipėda region.
