Dance styles have always been developed in professional music. Leonard Bernstein's (1918-1990) orchestral suite Symphonic Dances from the musical West Side Story is one of the world's most performed opuses of modern classical music. Its popularity is reflected in the numerous arrangements of this work for brass band by composer Paul Lavander. The nine-movement suite, which requires extraordinary virtuosity on the part of the performers, features a whole range of different dance music styles - cha-cha, mambo, Latin, etc. Inspired by Bernstein's exuberant suite, the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Ensemble will also present other interpretations of the 19th- and 20th-century symphonic dance genre, including works by Arthur Sullivan, Camille Saint-Saëns, Arturo Márquez and the famous Bolero by Moaurice Ravel.
