In 1991 he graduated in graphic arts from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, and studied in Düsseldorf with Gunter Luker. Since 1989 he has participated in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. M. Jonutis has held over 50 solo exhibitions and participated in dozens of collective exhibitions in Lithuania, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Belgium and France. The artist mainly creates sculptures, painted wood reliefs, paintings, graphic works and illustrates books.

2004 International Children's and Young People's Literature Association (IBBY) Lithuanian Chapter Award for the most artistic book "Rudnosiukas istorijos" (Autumn Stories), Vilnius, Lithuania.
2009 Special IBBY Lithuanian Section Award for the book "Worm Bird: Your First Book on the Art of Flying", Vilnius, Lithuania
2012, the artist was included in the IBBY Honour List for the book "Worm Bird: Your First Book on the Art of Flying".
In 2019, he was awarded the Lithuanian Artists' Union Prize at the annual Lithuanian Book Art Competition (2018) for the illustrations of the book "Karalaitė ant stiklo kalno".
