1969-1972 worked in the script editorial board of the Lithuanian Film Studio. 1989 together with Arvydas Juozaitis and Saulius Stoma, he founded the weekly "Šiaurės Atėnai" and in 1990-1994 edited it. 1994-1996 CEO of the daily "Lietuvos Aidas" editor. 1988-1990 Member of the Seimas of the Lithuanian Reorganization Movement. 1990-1992 Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, signatory. 1992-1996 and 1996-2000 Member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. 1996-1999 Minister of Culture of Lithuania in the Government of Gediminas Vagnoris. By 2000 belonged to the Party of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives), vice-chairman of the party.
Since 1971 Member of the Lithuanian Writers' Union, since 1986. member of the presidium of this union.
