Hoffmann Heinrich (Heinrich Hòfmann) 1809 06 13Frankfurt am Main 1894 09 20Frankfurt am Main, German writer. Dr. (1833). Physician. Studied medicine in Heidelberg and Halle. He became famous for his book Der Struwwelpeter (1845). It consists of didactic and satirical poems, illustrated with comic drawings, in which children's vices are hyperbolized and some situations are fictionalized; he wrote the book for his son to protest against the dull and moralistic children's works of the time. He was one of the first writers to illustrate a children's book. The book became popular in many countries around the world; it was translated by K. Binkis (Vaikai hawagai. Vesmos fabos ir obrazėliai 1928, 1995). Other works include König Nussknacker und arme Reinhold (König Nussknacker and poor Reinhold 1851), Prinz Grünewald and Perlenfein mit ihrem lieben Eselein (Prinz Grünewald and Perlenfein mit ihrem lieben Eselein 1871).
