In 1976 he graduated from Vilnius University with a degree in Lithuanian language and literature.From 1976 to 1993 he worked as an editor at the Vaga publishing house, and from 1993 to 1995 as a presenter of the Baltic TV culture programme. Since 1995 he has worked as a freelance author and translator. 2011-2018 Chairman of the Lithuanian Writers' Union.
