Born on 11 April 1951 in Švendriškiai, Jurbarkas district.
In 1973 graduated in German language and literature from Vilnius University. Worked in the publishing house of "Minties", was a teacher. 1978-1986 editor of "Vaga" publishing house, 1986-1989 deputy editor-in-chief of "Vyturis" publishing house. In 1989-1996 he edited the cultural almanac "Proskyna", in 1992-1994 - the weekly "Age" (founder and shareholder of the publishing house "Age"). Since 1994 freelance writer and translator. 2000-2007 Chairman of the Expert Commission on Literature and Publishing of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. 2003-2008 Chairman of the Curatorial Committee of the Thomas Mann Cultural Centre. He has published his work in the press, in various almanacs, anthologies and collections. The only translator to be awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art for his translations.
