Born on 01 March 1947 in Gilūšys, Trakai district.
In 1972 graduated from Vilnius Pedagogical Institute (now Lithuanian University of Education). He worked as a teacher in Klaipėda, then as an editor and correspondent in the editorial offices of newspapers and magazines "Mokslas ir gyvenimas", "Kinas" and others. In 1993 he was the head of the Lithuanian Culture Seminar at the University of Prague, in 1998 - at the T. Masaryk University in Brno. In 2002 and 2003 he was the head of the Czech language seminar at Vytautas Magnus University. Since 1989 he has been a member of the PEN Club. He has written essays on traditional and contemporary mythologisation, articles in the Czech press about T. Venclova, L. Karsavin, A. Macein and others. He has translated poetry and prose from Latvian, German, Czech, Slovak, Polish and French.
