Born in 1953 in Toronto, Canada, in a family of Lithuanian emigrants. After studying at the University of Toronto, he lived in Paris for several years. He studied French, worked as an English teacher and on the editorial staff of the literary magazine Paris Voices. He returned to Canada in 1979. He worked as artistic director at Humber College and edited the Canadian literary magazine Descant.
